Former Kentucky Wildcats player and NBA star, Rajon Rondo, has been arrested in southern Indiana on charges of illegal possession of a firearm and drug-related offenses. The arrest took place following a traffic stop on Interstate 65 in Jackson County.
According to reports, an ISP trooper observed a car driving recklessly on I-65 South in Bartholomew County after receiving a call from a concerned citizen. Shortly after, the trooper pulled over the vehicle and identified the 37-year-old Rondo. The officer allegedly detected the odor of marijuana emanating from the car, leading to a search.
During the search, the trooper discovered marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and a firearm. It is important to note that Rondo is currently under a protection order that prohibits him from possessing firearms. Consequently, he was taken into custody and transported to the Jackson County Jail. Later, he was able to secure his release after posting bond.
During the arrest, a juvenile was reportedly present with Rondo in the vehicle. Following Rondo's detention, the minor was released into the care of a family member.
Rondo now faces multiple charges, including possession of a firearm while being prohibited, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. The incident leading to the protection order against Rondo occurred in May 2022 when a woman in Louisville alleged that he had threatened her with a gun.
Prior to this incident, Rondo had a successful career in both college and professional basketball. He played two seasons with the Kentucky Wildcats before embarking on a 16-season journey in the NBA. Throughout his NBA career, Rondo achieved great success, winning two NBA championships, being named an NBA All-Star four times, and leading the league in steals during the 2010 season.
Rondo is scheduled for an initial appearance in the Jackson County Superior Court on February 27th to address these charges.
