Former first lady Rosalynn Carter, 96, has entered hospice care at home, following in the footsteps of her husband, former President Jimmy Carter, who started hospice care nine months ago. Their grandson made the announcement in a statement on Friday.
According to the statement, Rosalynn Carter and the 99-year-old former president are spending quality time together with their family during this challenging period. In May, the Carter Center revealed that the former first lady had been diagnosed with dementia. Despite her diagnosis, she has been enjoying her time at home with her husband, embracing the spring season in Plains, Georgia, and cherishing visits from loved ones.
Former President Jimmy Carter, the oldest-living American president and the longest-living president in U.S. history, served as the country's leader from 1977 to 1981. Although he was defeated by Ronald Reagan in his bid for reelection, his impact on the nation's history and his commitment to public service are widely recognized.
The Carters, who tied the knot in 1946, hold the distinction of being the longest-married presidential couple in American history. In an interview with ABC News two years ago, President Carter declared that marrying Rosalynn Carter was the "most important thing" in his life.
The resilient couple has four children: three sons and one daughter. The Carters also proudly embrace their roles as grandparents to 12 grandchildren, with one having tragically passed away. Furthermore, they treasure their ever-growing brood of great-grandchildren, who currently number at 14, as stated by the Jimmy Carter Library.
As the Carters face this new chapter of their lives together, their legacy of love, service, and familial bonds continues to inspire and touch the hearts of people across the nation.
