In a bizarre incident in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, a police officer unleashed a hail of bullets on his own patrol car after confusing a falling acorn for a gunshot. The incident occurred on November 12, 2023, involving deputies Jesse Hernandez and Beth Roberts from the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office.
Responding to two calls in the area, Hernandez and Roberts were investigating a report by a woman regarding her boyfriend, Marquis Jackson, who had allegedly refused to return her vehicle and sent threatening messages, including a picture of a firearm silencer.
As Roberts was speaking with the woman, Hernandez walked past his patrol car to retrieve some papers when an acorn fell and struck the hood. Believing he had been hit by a bullet, Hernandez immediately yelled "Shots fired!" and began firing at his own vehicle. Startled by her partner's actions, Roberts also opened fire.
Much to their relief, no one was injured as the handcuffed suspect, Marquis Jackson, remained unharmed within the vehicle. Hernandez, still convinced he was under attack, sought cover behind another parked vehicle in a nearby driveway while returning fire.
However, the incident took a comical turn during the internal investigation when Hernandez was shown a video of the acorn falling on his car. Realizing his mistake, he asked in disbelief, "Acorn?" to which Investigator Hogan confirmed, "Acorn."
Following the incident, Hernandez made the decision to resign on December 4, leaving the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office. His former partner, Beth Roberts, continues to remain a member of the department.
Cases of mistaken identity or misinterpretation can lead to dangerous consequences, highlighting the importance of officers remaining calm and ensuring accurate assessment of situations. The incident serves as a reminder of the meticulous training and awareness required in law enforcement to uphold public safety.
