In a shocking incident on Sunday afternoon, a Florida man was arrested after allegedly pulling out a gun and pointing it at an off-duty trooper during a slow-moving traffic situation. The incident took place on SR-570, also known as Polk Parkway, near milepost 18, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
The off-duty trooper, who was traveling in his personal vehicle along with his family members, found himself caught in the congestion when the driver of a red Chevy pickup truck started displaying aggressive behavior towards him, as stated by the FHP. The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Matthew Timothy Reiter, continuously drove alongside the trooper's vehicle, speeding up, slowing down, yelling, and using hand gestures.
Despite the trooper's attempts to ignore Reiter, the situation escalated when the suspect allegedly brandished a compact-style firearm and pointed it directly at the trooper. Realizing the seriousness of the incident, the trooper promptly contacted fellow officers to report the incident. Multiple troopers responded to the scene, but Reiter had already fled the area and went back to his residence in Auburndale.
However, the swift actions of the troopers prevented Reiter from evading arrest. They were already waiting for him when he returned home, where he was subsequently taken into custody. During the arrest, law enforcement officers discovered that Reiter was in possession of five different firearms.
As a result, Reiter is now facing charges of three counts each of unlawful display of a weapon and aggravated assault with a weapon, according to the FHP.
The incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers that law enforcement officers face, even when they are off-duty and with their families. The Florida Highway Patrol has commended the trooper's quick thinking and the collaborative efforts of the responding law enforcement officers in apprehending the suspect.
Reiter is scheduled to appear in court in relation to the charges brought against him. The investigation is ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
