In a shocking incident, body camera footage from November 2023 has emerged, revealing the moment a Florida deputy fired his weapon multiple times at his own patrol vehicle. The deputy, identified as Jesse Hernandez, apparently mistook the sound of an acorn hitting the roof of the car for a muffled gunshot, according to the video released alongside an investigation conducted by the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office of Professional Standards.

The newly released footage shows the dramatic sequence of events as Hernandez, with a handcuffed suspect inside the vehicle, exclaimed, "I'm hit! I'm hit!" despite no one shooting at him. He then stumbled to the ground and repeatedly shouted, "Shots fired!" before opening fire on his patrol vehicle.

Amidst the chaos, a sergeant from the sheriff's office also fired her weapon multiple times at the patrol vehicle, believing Hernandez was in imminent danger, as stated in the report. Following the gunfire, the sergeant checked on Hernandez's well-being, to which he responded, "I'm good, I feel weird but I'm good," as depicted in the footage.

The incident occurred in response to a report of a stolen vehicle near Fort Walton Beach. A woman had reported that her boyfriend refused to return her vehicle and had been sending her threatening messages with what seemed to be a firearm suppressor pointed at the dashboard of her car, according to a news release by the sheriff's office.

After detaining the boyfriend, conducting a search, and handcuffing him, Hernandez approached the patrol vehicle for another search. It was during this moment that he claimed to have heard what he believed to be a suppressed weapon and felt an impact on his right side, as detailed in the report.

Both Hernandez and the sergeant continued firing their weapons until they ran out of ammunition. Fortunately, the boyfriend was unharmed, and no weapon was found, the sheriff's office confirmed.

The investigation conducted by the sheriff's office concluded that Hernandez's use of force was deemed "not objectively reasonable." Consequently, Hernandez chose to resign from his position on December 4, 2023, approximately a year after joining the force, as reported by the sheriff's office.

In contrast, the sergeant's use of force was considered "objectively reasonable" and she was exonerated. Both individuals were cleared of any criminal wrongdoing, according to Okaloosa County Sheriff Eric Aden. Aden expressed understanding for the traumatic experience faced by the man detained in the patrol vehicle and emphasized the office's commitment to preventing similar incidents from occurring in the future through enhanced training measures.

ABC News has reached out to Hernandez for a comment, but no response has been received thus far. The dramatic turn of events serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by law enforcement officers and the importance of proper judgment and maintaining composure in high-pressure situations.
