In a shocking turn of events, Alexander Smirnov, a confidential source for the FBI, has been arrested in Las Vegas on Wednesday. Special counsel David Weiss wasted no time in charging Smirnov with felony false statement and obstruction charges, as he provided derogatory and false information about President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden to the bureau.

According to the charging documents, Smirnov, 43, is facing one count of making a false statement and one count of creating a false and fictitious record related to statements he made to the FBI on an FBI Form 1023. The documents reveal that Smirnov allegedly fabricated false derogatory information about President Biden and Hunter Biden in 2020, after Biden had declared his candidacy for the presidency.

One of the false claims was that Smirnov had a phone call with the owner of Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company, in March 2017, during which he stated that Hunter Biden was a member of Burisma's board. However, investigations show that Smirnov only contacted Burisma executives in 2017, well after Biden's tenure as vice president and after the Ukrainian prosecutor general had already been dismissed.

Moreover, Smirnov allegedly concocted a narrative in which he claimed that executives associated with Burisma had hired Hunter Biden in 2015 or 2016 to mitigate legal issues, paying him and then-Vice President Biden $5 million each. However, the new indictment asserts that these events were pure fabrications, and Smirnov used his biased views against Biden and his presidential candidacy to transform routine business contacts with Burisma into bribery allegations.

In a further attempt to perpetuate his false narrative, Smirnov reportedly changed his story during an interview with FBI agents in September 2023, claiming to have met with Russian officials. These additional false claims only served to reinforce the charges of false statement and obstruction.

Smirnov's arrest took place at the Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas upon his arrival from overseas, according to the Department of Justice. He is set to make his initial court appearance on Thursday to face the charges brought against him by special counsel David Weiss.

This arrest and indictment highlight the importance of verifying sources and information, especially when it comes to sensitive matters involving influential figures. The FBI's swift action in arresting Smirnov underscores their commitment to maintaining the integrity of their investigations and protecting the truth.
