Lancaster, Calif. - The family of Niani Finlayson, a 27-year-old woman who was shot and killed by a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy earlier this month, has initiated legal proceedings against the department and county, seeking $30 million in damages.

The incident occurred after Finlayson called 911 to report that her ex-boyfriend had attempted to strangle her. Responding deputies arrived at the scene, where they encountered Finlayson holding a knife and threatening her former partner.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department stated that when Finlayson advanced towards the man, a deputy opened fire, resulting in her tragic demise.

Representing Finlayson's family, attorney Brad Gage expressed their frustration, alleging that instead of being protected, she was "executed." Gage insisted that Finlayson was sitting on the ground when she was shot in the back.

According to Gage, Finlayson brandished the knife to safeguard herself and her 9-year-old daughter Xiasha from further harm, emphasizing that there was no valid reason for the deputy to resort to lethal force.

During a news conference on Thursday, Gage reiterated, "Niani was obviously upset that this man had injured her and her daughter but did not take any violent actions."

In response to the claims, the sheriff's department released a statement affirming that an investigation into the shooting is underway. The department also vowed to release body-worn camera footage of the incident earlier than the required timeframe, ensuring transparency.
