In a shocking turn of events, a court in Qatar has sentenced a former Navy officer, P Sugunakar, along with seven other former Indian Navy personnel, to death. The news has left Sugunakar's family in Visakhapatnam devastated and desperate for answers.
According to Sugunakar's brother-in-law, K Kalyan Chakravarty, the family is in distress and living in fear. His wife Vyjayanti, along with their son and daughter, are shocked and worried sick. The worst part is that they do not even know the nature of the charges against Sugunakar.
The eight former Navy officers, who were all employees of Doha-based Dahra Global, were taken into custody last year. However, the specific charges against them have not been revealed to the public.
Chakravarty has urged the Indian government to intervene in the matter and seek assistance from Qatar to ensure the safe return of Sugunakar and his fellow detainees. The family is pleading with the Centre to take up their case and provide them with much-needed support and guidance.
Before his arrest, Sugunakar would regularly communicate with his family, speaking to them on a daily basis. However, everything changed abruptly when news of his arrest reached them. Since July 2022, it has been nearly 15 months of anguish for his wife and two children, as there has been no contact whatsoever with Sugunakar. They are left in a state of limbo, uncertain of his well-being and desperate for any information regarding his situation.
The family's plea for the Centre's intervention highlights their desperation and hope for a resolution in this distressing situation. As they navigate this living nightmare, they are holding on to every ounce of hope, relying on the government to advocate for their loved one's safe return.
The Indian government now faces the responsibility of taking up the issue with Qatar and actively working towards securing the release of Sugunakar and the other former Navy officers. Their families eagerly wait for positive developments, praying for a swift resolution that will reunite them with their loved ones.
It is crucial for the Centre to prioritize this matter, considering the anguish and uncertainty that Sugunakar's family is currently enduring. Their appeal for assistance demands immediate attention and concerted efforts to ensure justice is served, and their beloved family member is brought back home safely.
