A derailment occurred on the F train in Coney Island, Brooklyn on Wednesday, causing significant disruptions to subway service, as confirmed by officials from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).
According to reports, the incident took place between the West 8th Street-New York Aquarium station and the Neptune Avenue station around 12:20 p.m. New York City Transit President, Richard Davey, stated that the Manhattan-bound F train, carrying thirty-seven passengers, slightly derailed on the elevated track.
Passenger Elisa Gales described feeling a "sharp jolt" that jerked her back in her seat when the derailment occurred. Thankfully, all passengers were safely evacuated by first responders, and no injuries were reported.
While the exact cause of the derailment is still under investigation, Davey suggested that a track issue may have been the primary factor. He mentioned a misaligned track as a possible cause and assured the public that the MTA will thoroughly investigate the incident.
Due to the derailment, F train service has been severely disrupted in Brooklyn. As of now, there is no F train service between the Avenue X station and the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station. Commuters should expect delays in both directions. However, the MTA aims to have F train service fully restored by the morning rush hour on Thursday, according to Davey.
To aid in the recovery efforts, a large crane will be deployed to help rerail the train. Davey assured the public that the process will be less complicated than the challenges faced during the previous week's incident involving two northbound No. 1 trains colliding and derailing in Manhattan.
The recent derailing serves as a reminder that such incidents, although rare, can occur. However, Davey emphasized that customers should still feel safe when utilizing the subway system, assuring them of the MTA's commitment to their safety and the ongoing investigation into this incident.
The MTA, along with representatives from the National Transportation Safety Board, will continue examining the details surrounding the derailment in order to prevent future occurrences.
