TAMPA, Fla. - After being on the run for over a month, prison escapee Sean Williams, who was facing charges of child rape and other crimes, was apprehended in Pinellas County on Tuesday evening. The arrest was made after authorities received a report about a suspicious person in the area, leading to a successful K-9 track.
A video obtained by News Channel 8 shows Williams, visibly bruised, being booked into jail following his capture. The footage depicts him being pushed in a wheelchair through the doors, with his ankles restrained and wrists handcuffed behind his back.
Williams had escaped from a prison van while being transported from a detention facility in Kentucky to a federal courthouse in Greeneville, Tennessee. He had been eluding law enforcement until his recent capture in Pinellas County.
According to U.S. Marshal David Jolley, Williams had traveled from North Carolina and eventually arrived in Pinellas County. It was during this time that he was noticed by a clerk at a local 7-Eleven store, who recognized him and promptly alerted the police. Authorities were then able to swiftly move in and apprehend Williams, who was hiding nearby.
The courageous clerk, Baumgartner, recounted the encounter, stating, "He was in my store. I just felt weird about it, so I rang him up. He bought a hot dog. And then I went outside and I followed sort of around the corner to see where he was going. And he disappeared.... I called the police and told them."
Williams had been indicted on various state charges and was facing federal charges for his escape. He had been listed on Tennessee's Most Wanted list for multiple offenses, including two counts of child rape, sixteen counts of aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor, and three counts of aggravated sexual battery involving victims under the age of 13. Additionally, he stood accused of drugging and sexually assaulting several women.
Law enforcement officials have commended the vigilant actions of the clerk and expressed relief that Williams has been taken into custody. The community can now breathe a sigh of relief knowing that a dangerous fugitive is back behind bars.
