The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has issued a Weather Watch, alerting Texans to anticipate higher electrical demand during an Arctic blast of cold air set to hit the state. The Weather Watch is in effect from January 15th to 17th, covering a period when two cold fronts are expected to make their way through North Texas.

The first cold front is predicted to arrive on Friday, followed by a second intense blast of Arctic air on Sunday. This second front is expected to bring frigid temperatures that will linger for an extended period, causing temperatures to plummet well below freezing.

ERCOT's Weather Watch serves as an advanced notification sent out under normal grid conditions, typically 3-5 days before a weather event. It aims to inform the public about the potential for increased electricity demand due to forecasted events, urging them to stay updated and mindful of changing conditions.

Last year, ERCOT unveiled the Texas Advisory and Notification System (TXANS), which includes two alerts: the ERCOT Weather Watch and the Voluntary Conservation Notice. During peak times, Texans may be asked to voluntarily reduce their electricity usage, if it is safe to do so.

ERCOT, the agency responsible for managing Texas' power grid, provided some insights into the electricity demand experienced in January 2023. Peak demand during that month reached 65,632 MW, with a record-breaking peak demand of 85,508 MW recorded on August 10th, 2023. ERCOT estimates that a single megawatt can power approximately 200 homes.

As Texans brace themselves for this anticipated Arctic blast, ERCOT's Weather Watch serves as a timely reminder for residents to prepare for extreme cold conditions and be mindful of their electricity usage.
