In a series of tweets over the weekend, Tesla founder Elon Musk made startling claims about the Biden administration's handling of the border crisis. Musk suggested that the administration is turning a blind eye to the influx of thousands of migrants crossing the border illegally in order to bolster Democratic voter rolls before the upcoming November election.
Highlighting specific developments, Musk pointed to recent guidance from Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, stating that "illegal presence alone is not grounds for deportation." He further claimed that criminal charges, convictions, or gang membership alone are insufficient for deportation, noting that one would have to be a convicted axe murderer to face deportation.
Musk went on to allege that the administration's leniency towards illegal immigrants is driven by an aim to secure more votes in the upcoming election. However, it is important to note that federal law prohibits noncitizens from voting in national elections. To become US citizens, these new migrants would likely have to go through a lengthy naturalization process that could take years. Noncitizens are also barred from casting ballots in most state elections, although some municipalities may allow voting at the local level.
The billionaire entrepreneur also drew attention to a recent incident in which two NYPD officers were attacked by a group of migrants near Times Square. Musk criticized the fact that six of the seven asylum-seekers involved were released without bail after being arrested. The accused migrants have reportedly fled to California, adding to concerns over their potential impact on public safety.
The post by Musk comes amidst growing criticism from both Republicans and some Democrats regarding President Biden's handling of the border crisis. The eccentric billionaire's claims about a "migrant-turned-voter scam" align with the narrative pushed by opponents of the administration's policies.
It should be noted, however, that the allegations made by Musk remain unsubstantiated, and there is no evidence to support his claim that the Biden administration is intentionally importing votes through the influx of migrants.
As the crisis at the US-Mexico border continues to escalate, with over 170,000 migrants flooding the five boroughs of New York City since spring 2022, efforts to address the situation have become a top priority for lawmakers. In fact, a Republican-led House panel recently approved articles of impeachment against Secretary Mayorkas over his handling of the border crisis.
Elon Musk's social media posts have sparked considerable debate, raising questions about the intersection of immigration policy, public safety, and election integrity. As the November election approaches, the issue of border control will likely remain a prominent topic of discussion with potentially far-reaching implications for both parties involved.
