Carroll's lawsuit accused Trump of making false statements against her in 2019, and the jury ruled in her favor, awarding her $18.3 million in compensatory damages and $65 million in punitive retribution.
Carroll revealed that she aims to donate the money to causes that are known to be disliked by Trump. She expressed the desire to give to organizations that would cause him pain, emphasizing her intent to make a statement with the funds. Additionally, Carroll mentioned that she may consider supporting a fund for women who have allegedly been sexually assaulted by Trump.
Trump responded to the jury's decision on his Truth Social platform, labeling it as "absolutely ridiculous" and announced his plan to file an appeal. He criticized the legal system, claiming it was being used as a political weapon.
During the interview, Carroll's attorney, Roberta Kaplan, expressed confidence in their ability to collect the awarded funds, acknowledging that it might not happen immediately. Kaplan mentioned Trump's significant real estate holdings as potential assets that could be sold to fulfill the judgment.
Ahead of the trial, Carroll admitted to facing tremendous anxiety, affecting her sleep and appetite. However, upon encountering Trump in the courtroom, she described the experience as seeing him as "an emperor without clothes," diminishing her previous fears.
This recent trial was separate from a previous one where Carroll was awarded $5 million for sexual abuse by Trump, along with earlier defamatory remarks against her. The proceedings were largely devoid of drama, although Trump caused a stir when he walked out during Kaplan's closing statement.
Reflecting on Trump's dramatic exit, Kaplan suggested that it may have worked in Carroll's favor, potentially adding another $10 million to the award. She humorously remarked on the irony of Trump, whom they portray as a bully who does not follow the rules, exhibiting such behavior during the trial.
Furthermore, Kaplan warned that if Trump continues to defame Carroll, they are prepared to bring additional legal action, potentially resulting in even more financial consequences for the former president.
As the legal battle unfolds, E Jean Carroll and her legal team remain determined to hold Trump accountable for his alleged defamatory statements and seek justice for their client.
