The legacy of Dexter Scott King, the son of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., was honored during a memorial service held on Saturday, February 10th. The service took place at the Medinah Temple in Chicago, Illinois, and was attended by prominent figures including American musician Stevie Wonder.

The ceremony was broadcasted on FOX 5 Atlanta, starting at 6:30 p.m. local time, allowing viewers to pay their respects from home. Those unable to watch on television could also stream the service live on FOX5Atlanta.com or through the FOX Local streaming platform.

Born on January 30, 1961, in Atlanta, Dexter Scott King was named after the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, where his father served as a pastor. Tragically, Dexter was just seven years old when his father was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1968. He grew up in Atlanta's Ebenezer Baptist Church, where his grandfather also served as a pastor.

Dexter was a graduate of Frederick Douglas High School, where he excelled in football and participated in various school organizations. Following in his father's footsteps, he attended Morehouse College in Atlanta.

Prior to his untimely passing, Dexter dedicated his life to perpetuating his father's legacy and protecting his intellectual property. He served as the chairman of The King Center and President of the King Estate, becoming well-versed in intellectual property law and management. Dexter's commitment to these responsibilities stemmed from his love and reverence for both his father and mother.

Known for his uncanny resemblance to his father, Dexter showcased his acting talents in the 2002 television movie "The Rosa Parks Story," where he portrayed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Despite his passion for the creative arts, Dexter selflessly balanced his love for acting with his duties to the King family legacy.

In memory of Dexter Scott King, his family has kindly requested that well-wishers refrain from sending flowers and instead make donations to the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change. This ensures that the ongoing work of promoting nonviolent social change, a cause dear to Dexter's heart, can continue to thrive.

The memorial service held in honor of Dexter Scott King allowed family members, friends, and admirers to reflect on his remarkable dedication to his father's legacy. As the son of a civil rights icon, Dexter will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to social justice and his tireless efforts to protect and propagate his father's intellectual contributions.
