In an interview with ABC News on Sunday, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco strongly rejected claims leveled by Republicans that the Department of Justice (DOJ) has been politicized against former President Donald Trump. Monaco emphasized that such accusations have fueled an "unprecedented rise" in threats against law enforcement officials and other public servants.

Monaco, who oversees all cases related to the January 6th Capitol attack, emphasized that the Justice Department she knows is comprised of dedicated individuals who work tirelessly regardless of who holds political office. She stated, "The Justice Department that I know is filled with dedicated men and women, investigators, lawyers, prosecutors, analysts, professional staff. They get up every day without regard to who's in the White House or who's in Congress."

The Deputy Attorney General expressed her concern over the damage these allegations have done to the reputation of the Justice Department and the toxic environment it has created. She added, "It really bothers me when I hear those claims because it does a disservice to the men and women of the Justice Department. It contributes to the toxicity that you're speaking about."

Furthermore, Monaco highlighted the alarming surge in threats targeting public officials, including law enforcement agents, prosecutors, judges, and election officials. She underscored that the Justice Department is actively addressing and responding to these threats. Monaco stated that she receives "urgent reports" from U.S. attorneys across the nation nearly every week about threats against public officials, including DOJ employees.

The Deputy Attorney General is part of a group of federal prosecutors who have faced attacks from Trump and his allies in recent months. Trump, who is currently facing four criminal prosecutions ahead of the 2024 presidential election, has repeatedly criticized Monaco, special counsel Jack Smith, and other DOJ prosecutors and federal judges involved in the legal cases against him.

In November, Trump issued disparaging remarks targeting Monaco, Smith, and former Justice Department official Andrew Weissmann, calling them a "team of losers and misfits." He also directed his ire towards "Radical Left Zealots and Thugs" whom he accused of working illegally for years to undermine him.

The ongoing rhetoric from Trump and his allies has raised concerns about the safety and wellbeing of public officials. Monaco's firm stance against politicization claims and her emphasis on the dedication of the Justice Department workforce highlight the need for a respectful and supportive environment for those entrusted with upholding justice.

As threats against law enforcement and public officials continue to escalate, it is essential for leaders to promote a climate of respect and to condemn actions that fuel hostility and endanger the lives of those working to uphold the rule of law. The Justice Department remains committed to ensuring the safety of its employees and the public they serve.
