In a joint interview on CBS News's "Face the Nation," Democratic mayors Brandon Johnson of Chicago and Mike Johnston of Denver addressed their concerns regarding the ongoing crisis at the southern border. The mayors highlighted the chaotic arrivals of buses and airplanes in their cities and criticized Texas Governor Greg Abbott for exacerbating the situation.

Mayor Johnston expressed frustration with the unexpected arrivals of buses and called for better coordination between city officials and federal agencies. While some mayors from other cities have considered turning away buses, Johnston emphasized the importance of a humanitarian approach to the situation. He requested that city officials be notified in advance and emphasized the need for the buses to arrive during regular working hours and at designated bus stops.

"We want a system that is humanitarian for both the newcomers and our cities. We understand that there will be an inflow, but we need coordination and a humanitarian approach to make it effective," Mayor Johnston stated. He further highlighted Denver's success in integrating more than 35,000 migrants who have arrived in the city.

Mayor Johnston also emphasized the importance of work authorization for asylees, pointing to successful integration efforts with Ukrainian and Afghan migrants. He called for a coordinated entry plan and federal support, stating that America knows how to effectively welcome and integrate asylees.

When asked about the support received from the White House, Mayor Johnson expressed the need for comprehensive immigration reform and urged Congress to take action. He criticized Governor Abbott's actions and the "rogue buses" that arrive in cities without coordination or support from local municipalities, furthering the chaos and division in the country.

The mayors stressed the need for better coordination among all levels of government to effectively respond to the border crisis. They called for comprehensive immigration reform and the allocation of necessary resources to manage the situation.

As the situation at the southern border continues to evolve, the voices of mayors like Johnson and Johnston shed light on the challenges faced by local governments in handling the influx of migrants. The calls for coordination, humanitarian approach, and comprehensive immigration reform highlight the complexity of the issue and the need for unified action to address the crisis.
