Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin Discharged from Hospital, Continues Recovery at Home
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has been released from Walter Reed military hospital after more than two weeks of treatment for complications related to his prostate cancer, according to a statement by the Pentagon. Austin expressed gratitude for the excellent care he received from the doctors and nursing staff at the medical center.
"I'm grateful for the excellent care I received at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and want to thank the outstanding doctors and nursing staff for their professionalism and superb support," Austin said in the statement. "Now, as I continue to recuperate and perform my duties from home, I'm eager to fully recover and return as quickly as possible to the Pentagon."
Austin had been hospitalized since January 1 and his staff waited several days before informing key officials about his hospitalization, including the White House, top national security officials, and high-ranking Pentagon officials.
Supervising doctors at Walter Reed released a statement indicating that Austin's condition had improved during his stay and that his strength is rebounding. "He underwent a series of medical tests and evaluations and received non-surgical care during his stay to address his medical needs, to include resolving some lingering leg pains. He was discharged home with planned physical therapy and regular follow-up. The Secretary is expected to make a full recovery," the statement read.
The specific details of Austin's treatment and prognosis were not disclosed in the statement. However, the doctors mentioned that he would undergo physical therapy and regular check-ups as part of his recovery process.
As Secretary of Defense, Austin plays a critical role in U.S. national security matters and holds significant responsibilities within the Pentagon. While he recuperates at home, he will continue to perform his duties remotely.
There is no information regarding the timeline for Austin's return to the Pentagon. However, his focus for now is to fully recover and regain his health.
The news of Austin's hospitalization and subsequent discharge comes at a time when the Defense Department is facing a range of challenges, including a transition in leadership with the new Biden administration. The Pentagon will continue to function under the guidance of Acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller until Austin is able to resume his duties.
The entire nation eagerly awaits Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin's swift recovery and return to his important responsibilities.
