Dean Phillips Reflects on New Hampshire Primary Results and Advocates for Bipartisanship
In the aftermath of the New Hampshire primary, Democratic presidential candidate Dean Phillips expressed his thoughts on his performance in the election and discussed his bid for the White House. Phillips, who secured approximately 20% of the vote in the primary, shared his experience attending a Trump rally in the Granite State during an interview on "FOX & Friends."
When co-host Steve Doocy questioned his decision to engage with Trump supporters before the vote, Phillips emphasized the significance of bipartisanship in the 2024 election. He explained that his aim was to reach out to all sides, not just pander to Democrats. Citing his successful flipping of a historically Republican-leaning district in 2018, Phillips highlighted his bipartisan approach and claimed the title of the second-most bipartisan member of Congress.
Phillips further expressed his admiration for the Trump rally attendees, stating that he interacted with around 50 of them and found them to be hospitable, thoughtful, and kind. He believes that the notion of severe division among Americans, which he termed "anger-tainment," is exaggerated and that people are more united than commonly portrayed.
Although Phillips came in a distant second place in the New Hampshire primary, with Biden securing over 50% of the write-in vote and Marianne Williamson in third place with more than 4% of the vote, he remains optimistic about his chances. Phillips reiterated his belief in the need for a new generation of politicians and expressed his desire for a matchup against Republican candidate Nikki Haley in the November election.
Dismissing the possibility of a third-party run, Phillips firmly stated that he would not split votes or engage in any efforts that could detract from Biden's chances. He emphasized his commitment to the Democratic nomination and rejected the idea that he would dissuade any potential third-party challenger to Biden.
When pressed by reporters about his stance on key issues, Phillips expressed frustration that the media seemed more focused on the idea of a third-party run than addressing the concerns of the American people. He urged reporters to ask about topics that matter to the public and voiced disappointment that, in his 90 days of campaigning, none had done so thus far.
Meanwhile, Joe Biden, who secured a resounding victory in the New Hampshire primary, released a statement emphasizing the high stakes of the upcoming election. He recognized that Donald Trump would be the Republican nominee and highlighted the importance of democracy, personal freedoms, and a strong economy in the face of COVID-19.
As the race for the Democratic nomination continues, Phillips remains dedicated to his message of bipartisanship and his belief in the need for new leadership to address the concerns of Americans. With the primary results behind him, he looks forward to further engaging with voters and charting a path to the White House.
