In a tragic incident on SB Interstate 5, two individuals lost their lives and nine others sustained injuries after a multi-vehicle accident occurred, involving a staggering total of 17 vehicles and 18 big-rigs. The accident took place between Millux Road and Old River Road, leading to the closure of this section for the rest of the day.

According to KCFD Battalion Chief Jim Calhoun, the thick fog prevailing at the time is believed to be a significant factor contributing to the series of collisions. The limited visibility on the highway likely caught motorists off guard, resulting in the pile-up involving a significant number of vehicles, making a total of 35 individuals impacted by the incident.

To manage the aftermath and clear the scene, CHP Buttonwillow PIO Manny Garcia has announced the closure of Southbound Interstate 5, rerouting traffic onto eastbound Highway 223 to Southbound 99. The closure and detour are expected to remain in effect until further notice, causing a major disruption in the flow of traffic in the area.

Motorists traveling southbound on Interstate 5 are urged to exercise caution and follow the detour instructions provided by the authorities. The closure of the highway segment has caused significant delays and congestion, further exacerbating the traffic nightmare for the affected commuters.

The identities of the deceased individuals and the extent of injuries suffered by those taken to the hospital have not been disclosed at this time. As investigations continue into the cause of the accident and to ensure the safety of all motorists, it is crucial for drivers to remain vigilant, especially during adverse weather conditions.

Today's tragic incident serves as a somber reminder of the unpredictable nature of the road and the need for everyone to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations. As authorities work to clear the wreckage and conduct a comprehensive investigation, our thoughts go out to the families and loved ones of those affected by this devastating accident.

Motorists are advised to stay updated on the situation through official channels and seek alternate routes if possible to avoid further congestion.
