A Dallas murder suspect, identified as 21-year-old Byron Carrillo, died from a self-inflicted wound in Austin on Sunday evening. The incident occurred after Carrillo attempted to flee from a Department of Public Safety (DPS) trooper and crashed the car he was driving.

According to DPS information officer Sgt. Deon Cockrell, troopers received information about Carrillo, who was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee south on Interstate 35. They attempted to stop the vehicle around 8:30 p.m. Sunday. However, Carrillo continued to drive away from DPS, eventually striking a concrete barrier and crashing after taking exit 238 near U.S. Highway 290.

After the crash, Carrillo fled the scene on foot and stopped in a parking area. There, he fired one round from a firearm, striking himself. He tragically succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities discovered that Carrillo was a suspect in a homicide that occurred earlier on Sunday in the 9700 block of Royce Drive in Dallas. Police found five people at the scene with apparent gunshot wounds, including a 1-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl. Tragically, three adults died at the scene, while the children were rushed to a local hospital.

Regrettably, the toddler also succumbed to his injuries while in the hospital. However, the teenage girl is reported to be in stable condition, according to NBC 5 in Dallas.

Dallas police revealed that Carrillo had been wearing an ankle monitor, which he had deliberately cut off either before or immediately after the shooting. He then fled the scene in a stolen vehicle, heading south on I-35, prompting a search operation that later led to his location in Austin.

The Texas Rangers are currently investigating Carrillo's death while in custody, while the Dallas homicide investigation remains ongoing. The tragic incident highlights the urgency in solving such cases to prevent further harm to innocent lives.
