CORTEZ, Colo. - A Colorado police officer was tragically killed in the line of duty on Wednesday following a shooting incident. The unidentified officer, from the Cortez Police Department, sustained injuries during a traffic stop that escalated into a violent confrontation.

According to the department's social media update, the incident occurred at around 11:25 am on Wednesday when an officer initiated a traffic stop on South Broadway. Gunfire was exchanged, and the officer was injured. The suspects fled the scene in their vehicle but were swiftly located in the 7500 block of Hwy 160-491. Another round of shots were exchanged between the suspects and law enforcement at the second location, resulting in the death of one suspect. The second suspect was successfully apprehended.

Despite being transported to Southwest Memorial Hospital, the injured officer tragically succumbed to their injuries. The identity of the fallen officer has not been released to the public at this time.

In a show of support for the Cortez Police Department, flags in the area have been lowered to half-staff. The community remains in shock and mourning following the loss of the dedicated officer.

Colorado Governor Jared Polis expressed his condolences in a statement, saying, "I am saddened to hear of the tragic passing of the Cortez Police Officer in the line of duty. My thoughts and prayers are with their family, as well as the Cortez Police Department and the community during this time. This officer dedicated their career to serving and protecting their community."
