Coast Guard Rescues 20 Individuals Stranded on Lake Erie Ice Floe

In a daring rescue operation, the Coast Guard successfully saved 20 people who were stranded on an ice floe in Lake Erie. The incident took place near Catawba Island State Park, located in Port Clinton, Ohio, on Monday morning.
The Coast Guard's Ninth District Great Lakes station received a distress call at approximately 10:20 a.m., notifying them that the individuals were trapped on a mile-long floe positioned about half a mile away from the park. Responding swiftly, a Coast Guard helicopter was dispatched from Air Station Detroit, while two airboats were deployed from nearby Station Marblehead. The Put-In-Bay fire department on South Bass Island and the Ottawa County sheriff's office also lent their assistance in the rescue operation.
According to Petty Officer Jessica Fontenette, the Coast Guard successfully rescued nine people from the ice floe. Four more individuals were saved by the combined efforts of the Put-In-Bay fire department and the Ottawa County sheriff's office. Meanwhile, seven individuals managed to make their way to safety by utilizing an airboat.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the incident. The coordinated efforts of multiple agencies ensured the safe retrieval of all individuals who found themselves in a perilous situation on Lake Erie.
