Incredible footage captured by FOX 11 Los Angeles reveals a heart-stopping scene as three multimillion-dollar homes precariously hang on the edge of a cliff in Dana Point, California. The homes, situated on Scenic Drive, were left dangerously close to plummeting into the ocean after a recent storm triggered a massive collapse of the coastline.
The powerful winter storms, characterized by heavy rain and hurricane-force wind gusts, washed away a significant portion of the cliff, leaving the homes vulnerable with their rear ends inches away from the edge. The video footage showcases a sizeable accumulation of dirt, rocks, and sand at the base of the cliff, with crashing waves relentlessly pounding against the sediment. The remnants of what were once stairs leading to the cliff's base have been swept away as well.
Despite the unsettling sight, Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley assured the public that the cliffside homes are being closely monitored and are not currently in immediate danger. A building inspector has determined that no structural damage has occurred, alleviating concerns of premature red-tagging, a designation that deems the homes unsafe for habitation. Consequently, no evacuations are planned at this time.
However, Foley cautioned that the homeowners are not yet in the clear as the saturated ground remains a potential risk factor. With more rain in the forecast, the homes could face further challenges. City officials have released a statement outlining their communication with the homeowner, confirming that there is presently no imminent threat to the property and no immediate action is required.
Council member Steve Knoblock, who visited the site, recalled a similar incident in the past that resulted in the condemnation and demolition of a house in the area due to the instability of the slope. The city of Los Angeles has also experienced a significant impact from the storms, with 562 mudslides and 15 homes being red-tagged as of Wednesday evening, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.
As residents in Dana Point watch nervously, the homes perched on the cliffside serve as a reminder of the fragile nature of coastal living. The authorities remain vigilant, keeping a close eye on the situation, while residents hope that Mother Nature will relent, sparing their picturesque homes from any further danger.
