In response to recent security concerns on its border with Myanmar, China's military has announced plans to commence "combat training activities" from Saturday. This comes just a day after a convoy of trucks transporting goods into Myanmar caught fire, an incident labeled as an insurgent attack by Myanmar state media.

The Southern Theatre Command, one of China's People's Liberation Army's five divisions, revealed that the training is intended to evaluate the rapid maneuverability, border sealing, and fire strike capabilities of their theatre troops. The drills, which will be carried out until November 28, will primarily take place in the proximity of Manghai, Manling, and Qingshuihe villages, according to a statement from the provincial government of China's Yunnan, which shares a border with Myanmar.

Myanmar's military junta spokesperson, Zaw Min Tun, confirmed that Myanmar had been informed about the upcoming drills and emphasized that they aimed to promote stability and peace near the border. He further emphasized that the exercises did not undermine China's policy of non-interference in Myanmar's internal affairs. Zaw Min Tun also highlighted the strong military ties between the two nations, stating that collaboration between their armies was friendly and growing.

The incident involving the burning trucks in the town of Muse comes at a time when Myanmar's military is facing significant challenges, as it has lost control of several towns and military outposts due to a co-ordinated offensive. Since the military coup in 2021, this offensive marks the largest display of resistance. The United Nations estimates that more than two million people have been displaced in Myanmar as a result of the escalating violence.

China's decision to conduct combat training activities on the border with Myanmar reflects the growing concern over regional security dynamics. The drills are expected to enhance the readiness and response capabilities of the Chinese military while reaffirming their commitment to supporting stability in the region.
