Chicago, IL - As Halloween approaches, residents of Chicago are preparing for a bone-chilling and potentially snowy holiday. The latest forecast from NBC 5 Storm Team indicates that the city will experience sub-freezing temperatures and the possibility of light snow showers on Tuesday.

According to NBC 5 Meteorologist Alicia Roman, Monday morning started off with a freeze warning in nearly all counties surrounding Chicago, which remained in effect until 9 a.m. Temperatures dipped to the mid and upper 20s, with even lower temperatures expected across interior north and northwest Illinois. The National Weather Service issued an alert advising residents to protect tender plants and prevent freezing of outdoor water pipes.

While clouds are predicted to clear out and give way to sunshine on Monday, temperatures will remain unseasonably cold. Highs are expected to range from the low 40s to upper 30s, well below the average for this time of year. Residents should brace themselves for even colder temperatures due to lower wind chill values.

By Halloween on Tuesday, the forecast becomes even more frigid and blustery. Overnight temperatures are projected to drop further into the 20s and 30s, leading to another freeze warning. Roman predicts a high temperature of 32 degrees by 9 a.m., with no significant rise throughout the day. In fact, temperatures are expected to hover in the 30s for the entirety of Halloween.

The forecast models indicate that light snow showers will develop mid-morning on Tuesday, continuing intermittently through the afternoon. An area of low pressure will sweep across Illinois and Northwest Indiana, potentially causing disruptions during both the morning and afternoon commutes. The NWS advises caution while driving, as some slick surfaces may form, particularly on elevated areas.

In addition to the snow showers, Tuesday afternoon could experience gusty wind conditions, with some parts of the city expecting wind gusts of up to 45 miles per hour. The NWS warns of possible squalls leading to brief visibility reductions under one mile. Wind chills are anticipated to drop into the teens and 20s, making it an exceptionally cold and blustery Halloween.

While snow totals are not expected to be significant in Illinois, Northwest Indiana may see over two inches of snow due to lake effect slush. However, relief is in sight for Chicago residents, as temperatures are expected to gradually rise back into the upper 50s by the end of the week.

As Chicagoans prepare for a Halloween filled with freezing temperatures and the possibility of snow, it is advised to dress warmly, take precautions for outdoor plants and water pipes, and exercise caution while commuting in potentially slick conditions.
