ROCKCASTLE COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A train derailment in Kentucky has resulted in a confirmed chemical spill, leading to the evacuation of two households. The incident occurred between Mullins Station and Livingston in Rockcastle County on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Rockcastle County Sheriff, the CSX train derailed shortly before 2:30 p.m., involving at least 15 cars. Among the derailed cars, two sulphur cars were breached, resulting in the spillage of some of their contents.

Thankfully, only one member of the two-person crew sustained minor injuries and received treatment at the scene. No hospitalizations have been reported thus far, according to Kentucky emergency management officials.

Governor Beshear has confirmed the evacuation of one family as a precautionary measure, and efforts are underway to evacuate another household in response to the derailment. The affected area is described as "extremely remote" by the sheriff, making response and assessment measures more challenging.

Emergency management teams are actively working to mitigate the situation and ensure the safety of the local residents. With the area being evacuated, authorities are urging people to stay clear of the affected site until further notice.

The sheriff mentioned that crews are currently evaluating the extent of the spill and determining the best course of action to address and contain the chemicals. Additional information is expected as the situation unfolds.

This incident serves as a reminder of the potential risks associated with train derailments and the need for comprehensive measures to ensure the safe transportation of hazardous materials. Authorities will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as they become available.

As news of the Kentucky train derailment spreads, concerned citizens are urged to follow guidance from local authorities and exercise caution in the vicinity of the derailment.
