In a daring incident near the Capitol building on Sunday, Capitol Police successfully apprehended two armed men after a high-speed chase and recovered a modified firearm that could transform into a machine gun. ABC News reports that the incident unfolded when two individuals crashed a stolen vehicle into a barricade outside the Capitol.

According to authorities, the suspects, identified as Ricardo Glass and Onosetale Okojie, both 20 years old, were spotted in a stolen white Infiniti Q50 near Union Station. Growing suspicious of the driver's behavior, a vigilant police officer attempted to make a traffic stop. However, the driver accelerated, evading law enforcement until he ultimately crashed into a Capitol vehicle barricade at the intersection of 1st and D streets in Northeast D.C.

Following the collision, Glass and Okojie swiftly exited the stolen car and attempted to flee on foot. Coincidentally, the crash happened in close proximity to the Capitol Police headquarters, which enabled law enforcement officers to quickly engage in a pursuit and ultimately apprehend both suspects in the nearby neighborhood.

During the arrest, police discovered two handguns, one of which had been modified with a device referred to as a "giggle switch." This alteration effectively transformed the weapon into a machine gun. Further investigation revealed that one of the handguns found in the stolen vehicle was a Glock, equipped with a 22-round extended magazine.

Ricardo Glass and Onosetale Okojie now face multiple charges, including carrying a pistol without a license, unauthorized use of a vehicle, and unlawful possession of a machine gun. The seriousness of these charges highlights the gravity of their actions and underscores law enforcement's commitment to public safety.

This incident also sheds light on the ongoing issue of gun violence in the United States, as Capitol Police have already seized over 30 firearms this year alone. The recovery of a modified weapon capable of automatic fire emphasizes the need for heightened vigilance and stricter firearm regulations.

The prompt actions taken by the Capitol Police in apprehending these armed individuals prevented any harm to the public and underscore the dedication and bravery exhibited by law enforcement officers every day. Investigations into the motives behind the suspects' actions are ongoing, as authorities work to ensure the safety and security of the Capitol and its surrounding areas.

As the nation continues to grapple with the challenge of curbing gun violence, incidents such as this serve as reminders of the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address this pervasive issue. The Capitol Police's resolve to protect the public and their unwavering commitment to maintaining the safety of government institutions is commendable in the face of such threats.
