In a recent outbreak of Salmonella, two people have tragically lost their lives in Minnesota, making it the state with the highest number of cases associated with the consumption of contaminated cantaloupes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC has issued a warning, urging residents to be cautious and take appropriate measures to avoid further illness.

Currently, Minnesota has reported a total of 13 confirmed cases related to the outbreak. However, health officials believe the actual number of affected individuals could be much higher, as many cases may have gone unreported thus far.

Kirk Hughes from Minnesota Poison Control expressed concern about the potential for a greater number of cases, stating, "If we've heard of a couple of cases, there's probably going to be a lot more." Urging the public to come forward with information, Hughes emphasized the importance of reporting any instances of cantaloupe consumption within the six-hour to six-day window preceding the onset of symptoms.

Health officials have provided specific information regarding the affected cantaloupe products sold in various locations. They have advised consumers to discard any recalled cantaloupes and thoroughly clean any surfaces that may have come into contact with them. The brands and regions affected include:

1. Whole cantaloupes labeled as "Malichita" or "Rudy," with the number "4050" and "Product of Mexico/produit du Mexique." These were sold primarily in Minnesota.

2. Vinyard brand pre-cut cantaloupes, such as cantaloupe cubes, melon medleys, and fruit medleys, sold between October 30 and November 10, 2023, in Oklahoma stores. Most of them have a yellow label with "Vinyard," while some have a red label with "Fresh."

3. ALDI whole cantaloupes and pre-cut fruit products, including whole cantaloupes, cantaloupe chunks in clamshell packaging, and pineapple spears in clamshell packaging. These were sold with best-by dates between October 27 and October 31, 2023, in ALDI stores located in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

4. Freshness Guaranteed brand and RaceTrac brand pre-cut cantaloupes, such as cantaloupe chunks, seasonal blend, melon mixes, and fruit mixes. These products, packed in clear square or round plastic containers, have best-by dates between November 7 and November 12, 2023. They were sold in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.

Minnesota health officials are collaborating closely with the Minnesota Department of Health to identify and track additional cases linked to the salmonella outbreak. They urge anyone experiencing symptoms such as stomach cramping, diarrhea, nausea, or fever, after consuming cantaloupe within six hours to a week, to report to health officials promptly.

The Minnesota Health Department and Minnesota Poison Control are dedicated to investigating and containing the outbreak. However, at the time of writing, they were not immediately available for comments regarding the current situation.

As the investigation continues, it is paramount for consumers to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect their health. Following the guidelines provided by health officials is crucial in curbing the spread of salmonella and preventing further tragic incidents.
