California Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo, representing the state's 52nd Assembly District, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after allegedly crashing into parked cars in Los Angeles on Friday morning. The incident occurred in the Montecito Heights neighborhood, with witnesses reporting hearing a loud bang and seeing Carrillo's airbags deploy.

According to reports, the collision involved two parked cars, causing Carrillo's Audi to veer back into the middle of the road. Concerned witnesses approached Carrillo, who appeared to gesture that she was uninjured. However, witnesses noted signs of impairment, including the smell of alcohol, slurred speech, and overall impaired behavior.

Responding officers conducted a field sobriety test, during which Carrillo struggled to maintain her balance. Meanwhile, Carrillo claimed that she lost control of her vehicle due to sneezing, apologizing for the accident. However, subsequent testing revealed a blood alcohol concentration more than double the legal limit, according to LAPD Capt. Kelly Muniz.

Following her arrest, Carrillo was booked in Los Angeles County Jail around 4 a.m. and was released without bail on the same day, according to records from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office.

In a statement issued after her arrest, Carrillo apologized and recognized that she is held to a higher standard as an elected official. However, she did not specifically address the DUI charge. Carrillo, who became the first formerly illegal immigrant to be elected to the state assembly in 2017, received an endorsement from California Governor Gavin Newsom during her 2022 reelection campaign.

Carrillo is scheduled to appear in court on December 1st to address the charges against her. The incident raises concerns about the behavior and judgment of a prominent lawmaker, as well as the potential consequences for her political future.
