According to a recent NBC News poll conducted from January 26-30, President Joe Biden's approval ratings have fallen to a new low, with 37% of registered voters expressing approval and 60% disapproval. This marks the lowest approval rating for any president in the NBC News poll since George W. Bush's second term.

The poll reveals significant challenges for Biden as he faces a dissatisfied electorate and a challenging political climate just nine months before his potential re-election. Despite a growing economy and minimal opposition for his party's nomination, Biden trails former President Donald Trump on major policy and personal comparisons. Notably, Trump holds a 20-point advantage over Biden in handling the economy and a 30-point advantage on immigration and border control.

Furthermore, the poll shows a reversal from the 2020 election, with Trump now holding a 16-point advantage over Biden in terms of competence and effectiveness. This shift is concerning as it reflects a decline in Biden's standing against Trump compared to four years ago. Additionally, fewer than 3-in-10 voters approve of Biden's handling of the Israel-Hamas war.

When considering a hypothetical 2024 general-election matchup, the poll indicates that Trump leads Biden by 5 points among registered voters, with Trump garnering 47% support and Biden with 42%. However, these results fall within the poll's margin of error.

The poll also highlights Biden's struggles with specific demographics. His approval rating is particularly low among Latinos, with just 35% approving of his job performance. Younger voters, aged 18-34, and independents also express low approval for Biden, with only 29% and 27% approving, respectively.

While the poll paints a challenging picture for Biden, there is still time for him to change voters' perceptions, according to Democratic pollster Jeff Horwitt. Horwitt emphasizes that these findings reflect the current climate in January and not October 2024 when attitudes may change.

Despite Biden's declining approval ratings and trailing position against Trump, he fares better when pitted against the former president in the event of a felony conviction. In this scenario, Biden holds a two-point advantage over Trump, though still within the margin of error.

The NBC News poll also delves into other hypothetical matchups, revealing that Trump's advantage over Biden increases to 6 points when considering third-party candidates. Additionally, the poll shows former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley leading Biden by 9 points in a hypothetical matchup.

Overall, the poll's results suggest a divided country and a highly contested election on the horizon. While Biden's approval ratings have reached a new low and he trails Trump in hypothetical matchups, these numbers may change as the election draws nearer.
