NASHVILLE, Tenn. - After allegedly throwing a 2-year-old against a wall while babysitting, a man has been apprehended by law enforcement. The suspect, identified as Ashton Cole Sensing, was taken into custody in Putnam County following an extensive manhunt conducted by multiple agencies.
The incident occurred on December 2 when authorities responded to a distress call on J D Randolph Road. They discovered the unconscious 2-year-old child, Ventura Mora-Francisco, at the scene. The toddler was rushed to a local hospital and subsequently transferred to Vanderbilt Medical Children's Hospital due to a severe traumatic brain injury.
During the investigation, law enforcement conducted interviews with Sara Mora, the child's mother, and Sensing, her live-in boyfriend who was babysitting the child and three other children when the incident occurred. Initially, Sensing claimed that the child fell into a small air vent and later fell again, resulting in the child becoming unresponsive while Sensing was napping on the couch. However, Sensing later admitted to becoming frustrated with the child multiple times throughout the day, leading to him throwing the child against a wall and inflicting further harm, according to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.
Medical professionals at Vanderbilt Medical Children's Hospital determined that the child's injuries were non-accidental blunt trauma, deemed inoperable and unsurvivable. Sadly, three days after the incident, on December 5, the 2-year-old passed away as a result of the traumatic injuries sustained.
Following intense search efforts, a first-degree murder warrant and an aggravated child abuse warrant were issued against Sensing on December 7. Law enforcement authorities had been pursuing him since December 6, but he managed to elude capture until December 10, when he was apprehended by authorities at a Dollar General store on West Broad Street in Putnam County.
Sheriff Eddie Farris expressed his sorrow over the tragic loss of the innocent child, stating, "This is a very sad and unfortunate outcome that resulted in the brutal death of an innocent child. There is no more important resource than the future of our children."
Sensing currently remains in custody and will face charges for first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse.
