In a continued escalation of the conflict in eastern Ukraine, Russian forces have launched a third wave of assaults on the town of Avdiivka, according to its Ukrainian head, Vitaly Barabash. The town, situated near the Russian-held regional stronghold of Donetsk, has been facing a relentless onslaught for over a month, with the center of the industrial hub now being systematically shelled.
Barabash, speaking about the ongoing attacks, stated, "The third wave began. They are attacking from all directions, from the flanks of the south and north, as they did before. They are attacking the industrial zone." Avdiivka has been on the front line since 2014 and is a part of the Donetsk region, which the Kremlin has claimed to have annexed, along with three other regions.
According to Barabash, the Russian forces are employing a significant amount of infantry in their attacks. One particular concern is the use of guided air bombs and cluster munitions, resulting in an alarming number of between 30 and 40 "massive" strikes each day. The intensity of the assault has left the town largely destroyed, with Barabash reporting that only 1,350 residents remain out of an original population of approximately 30,000.
Despite the dire circumstances, Avdiivka has become a symbol of Ukrainian resistance, standing steadfast against the Russian aggression. Over the past week, 102 people have been successfully evacuated from the town, while the remaining residents continue to face immense hardships.
The international community has voiced concern over the situation in Avdiivka, with calls for an immediate ceasefire and diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict. Ukraine has accused Russia of supporting separatist forces in the region, while Russia denies any direct involvement and maintains that it is only aiding Russian-speaking civilians.
As the attacks persist and the town remains under siege, the situation in Avdiivka serves as a chilling reminder of the ongoing tensions in eastern Ukraine, which continue to threaten the stability of the region. Immediate action is needed to protect the lives and well-being of the remaining residents and bring an end to the violence ravaging this once-thriving industrial hub.
