Authorities in Clyde, New York finally broke their silence on Friday concerning the recent incident of alleged assault at Clyde-Savannah High School. Four teenagers, three aged 17, 16, and 15, have been charged in connection to the incident, which took place on October 31st. The defendants face charges including aggravated sexual abuse, hazing, and forcible touching.
Wayne County Assistant District Attorney, Christine Callanan, expressed her understanding of the community's suffering. "I know they're reeling. I know parents have a lot of questions," she said.
According to the police, the victim was subjected to the abuse while in a locker room. The severity of the incident is further exacerbated by the fact that it involved members of the football team, affecting not just the school but the entire community. Callanan reassured the public that the investigation is active and ongoing, with law enforcement diligently following up on any received information and leads.
The fourth suspect, a 16-year-old boy, faces an additional charge of unlawful surveillance. It was reported that the victim's parents discovered a recording of the assault circulating on social media, prompting their involvement in the case.
The fate of the defendants now lies with the court system, as they are yet to determine whether the teenagers will be tried as adults or youthful offenders. The distinction between the two will significantly impact the potential sentences and the public availability of their records, explained Callanan. She emphasized that there is a "substantial range" when it comes to sentencing in such cases.
Notably, Callanan refrained from commenting on whether the suspects were varsity football players or whether an adult was present in the locker room at the time of the alleged assault. In the aftermath of the incident, the school district made an announcement about the abrupt end to the football team's undefeated season, suggesting a connection to the assault investigation.
As the community awaits further updates on the case, parents and concerned citizens have been calling for more action to address the incident and ensure the safety and well-being of students at Clyde-Savannah High School. The gravity of the allegations has raised alarm and highlighted the need for a thorough investigation and appropriate accountability for all involved parties.
