Central California is currently experiencing the arrival of an atmospheric river, bringing heavy rainfall, snow, and strong winds to the region. The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Advisory for Fresno and Madera counties until 10:30 am Thursday morning, urging drivers to exercise caution on the roads.
The initial round of storms began with light rainfall on Wednesday evening, intensifying into stronger showers on Thursday morning. This system is also affecting other parts of California, including Southern and Northern regions. Some areas in the North Valley and Foothill communities can anticipate heavier rainfall throughout the day.
Communities, such as Mariposa, Oakhurst, and Coarsegold, have been placed under a Flood Watch due to potentially hazardous conditions. Thunderstorms are also forecasted for specific areas of the Valley, and residents are advised to seek shelter if thunder is heard.
The High Sierra region, situated above 5,000 feet, is projected to receive significant snowfall, with accumulations ranging from one to three feet. Lower elevations, as low as 4,000 feet, can expect snow accumulations of one to three inches. In the San Joaquin Valley, sustained winds are predicted to reach approximately 35 mph, while wind gusts in the High Sierra could peak at 75 mph.
The second round of storms, expected to arrive over the weekend and into the following week, may cause precipitation and snow totals to double. Officials from the California Office of Emergency Management have mobilized resources to address any potential emergencies, such as flooding and other dangerous situations.
High winds accompanying the atmospheric river have already caused power outages in parts of Fresno County, as reported on Wednesday. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about local weather updates and to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
As the atmospheric river continues to impact Central California, ABC30 will provide live updates to keep residents informed about any developments. Stay tuned for the latest information on this powerful weather system and its potential effects on the region.
