In a shocking incident highlighting the worsening security situation in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, armed gunmen have seized at least six nuns from the Sisters of Sainte-Anne congregation. The armed assailants halted a minibus carrying the nuns and other passengers, including the driver, and forcefully took them hostage. The brazen kidnapping took place on January 19 in broad daylight, causing concerns over the safety of civilians in the capital city.
The Haitian Conference of Religious confirmed the abduction of the nuns in a press release, expressing strong condemnation of the heinous act that disregards the dignity of these dedicated women. Bishop Pierre-André Dumas of Anse-à-Veau and Miragoâne joined the outcry, appealing for the safe release of the hostages and urging an end to such criminal practices. The bishop called upon the Haitian society to come together in solidarity to secure the swift return of the nuns to their families and communities.
The kidnapping incident comes amidst a surge in violence and insecurity gripping the capital. Gangs have intensified their brutal activities, leading to entire neighborhoods being cut off from access and heightening fear and tension among the residents. The recent clashes between rival gangs in the Solino district resulted in a high number of casualties, with witnesses reporting around twenty deaths.
Carrefour Péan and Delmas 24, two other districts in Port-au-Prince, have also witnessed targeted attacks by criminal groups. To defend themselves, residents have erected barricades in the streets to ward off potential threats. Kidnappings have become alarmingly common in the city and along major roads, with cases increasing over the past few weeks. Just last week, a doctor and a justice of the peace were kidnapped and only released after a ransom payment.
The situation in Port-au-Prince demands urgent attention and action from authorities to restore peace and security for the residents. The safety and well-being of civilians, including dedicated individuals like the nuns who work tirelessly to support and educate the most vulnerable, must be safeguarded. The international community is also called upon to extend support and assistance to Haiti during these challenging times.
As the search for the kidnapped nuns continues, the prayers and hopes of the Haitian people are with them, their families, and all those affected by the ongoing violence in the country.
