Washington, Nov 27 (Reuters) - Argentina's President-elect Javier Milei is scheduled to meet with a top security aide to U.S. President Joe Biden in Washington, the White House confirmed on Monday. This comes after Milei, a far-right libertarian, surprised many by having lunch with former U.S. President Bill Clinton during his first foreign trip after winning the run-off vote earlier this month.

Milei, known as a self-described anarcho-capitalist, arrived in New Jersey with a small group of advisors, including former central banker Luis Caputo and his campaign manager sister Karina Milei. Upon his arrival in the United States, Milei visited the tomb of a prominent orthodox Jewish rabbi before having lunch with Clinton, according to a statement from the president-elect's office.

On Tuesday, Milei is set to meet with U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, while his economic advisors are scheduled to meet with senior U.S. finance officials to discuss the upcoming president-elect's economic priorities.

Meetings with officials from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are also on the agenda, as Milei aims to explain his economic plans. During his campaign, Milei advocated for dollarizing Argentina and closing down its central bank. This is crucial as Argentina currently faces significant economic challenges, with inflation approaching 150%, making it the largest debtor nation to the IMF.

Milei is set to assume office on Dec. 10, amidst a backdrop of high poverty rates and an impending recession in South America's second-largest economy.

In an earlier report, Reuters stated that a planned visit to Buenos Aires by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who is seen as ideologically aligned with Milei by many, is unlikely to occur. This information was provided by a source close to Trump's 2024 presidential campaign.

With an array of meetings and engagements lined up in Washington, Milei's visit to the United States marks an important step in setting the stage for his upcoming presidency and economic agenda.
