Amtrak service on the Northeast Corridor has been restored after experiencing hours of disruption at the start of New Year's Eve. However, officials have warned that residual delays should still be anticipated.
The service disruptions were caused by server problems on Sunday morning, affecting Amtrak trains that stop at major cities such as New York City, Washington, Boston, and Albany. Commuters faced cancellations and extensive delays, leading to frustration among passengers.
One commuter, Victoria Lerma, expressed her disappointment, stating, "The longer you wait, the more it kind of affects your mood. You were excited to go to your destination but now you have to wait out in the train station. It is not fun." Lerma's train from Manhattan to Schenectady experienced significant delays.
Fortunately, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority reported that it did not experience any severe delays as a result of the Amtrak issues. However, NJ Transit had to suspend Northeast Corridor rail service between Trenton and New York Penn Station for several hours. During the suspension, Midtown Direct rail service was redirected to Hoboken.
NJ Transit has since announced that their trains are "operating on or close to schedule with residual delays." Meanwhile, Amtrak and NJ Transit delays also affected travel in and out of Penn Station on Saturday night due to signal issues.
The disruptions occurred at a time when hundreds of thousands of people were gathering in Times Square for New Year's Eve celebrations. Many rely on public transportation to reach Manhattan, making the delays even more impactful.
Although the service was restored within a few hours on Sunday morning, some residual delays persisted before the Amtrak server issues temporarily halted trains once again later in the morning. On Saturday night, the Long Island Rail Road also experienced delays due to signal trouble.
Overall, while Amtrak service has been restored, riders should remain prepared for delays as they navigate the Northeast Corridor. Commuters are advised to stay updated with the latest information from their respective transit agencies to plan their journeys accordingly.
