American Airlines Posts Strong Q4 2023 Profits, Exceeding Expectations
American Airlines has delivered an impressive financial performance in the fourth quarter of 2023, surpassing Wall Street estimates. The airline reported adjusted earnings per share of 29 cents, far above the expected 10 cents. Additionally, revenue for the quarter reached $13.06 billion, beating the anticipated $13.02 billion.
Despite a significant decrease in net income from $803 million to $19 million year-over-year, this result reflects the resilience of American Airlines, especially considering the impact of one-time items such as a new labor agreement. The airline had previously estimated breaking even for the December period in its third-quarter earnings report.
The CEO of American Airlines, Robert Isom, expressed satisfaction with the company's strong year-end performance, emphasizing their focus on reliability, profitability, and strengthening their balance sheet. Isom also highlighted the opportune time for travel and anticipated a busy first and second quarter.
Looking ahead to the first quarter of 2024, American Airlines projects an adjusted net loss per share ranging from 15 cents to 35 cents. Costs, excluding fuel, are expected to rise between 2% and 4%, while flying capacity is projected to increase by 6.5% to 8.5%.
For the full year 2024, American Airlines anticipates adjusted earnings per share ranging from $2.25 to $3.25, with a mid-single-digit increase in flying capacity compared to 2023. CEO Robert Isom further announced a profit-sharing payment for all U.S. and Canada-based employees in March, demonstrating the company's strong financial health.
The earnings report coincided with updates from other major airlines, including Southwest and Alaska, which also reported their fourth-quarter earnings on the same day. United Airlines, which announced better-than-expected results earlier in the week, provided an optimistic outlook for 2024.
While American Airlines had its best-ever on-time departures during the December holidays despite challenging weather conditions, concerns have arisen regarding potential delivery impacts for future aircraft. The recent suspension of Boeing's capacity to increase production of the Boeing 737 Max by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) raises uncertainties for American Airlines, which plans to add 20 more of these aircraft to its fleet this year.
On an earnings call, CEO Robert Isom expressed his frustration with Boeing, emphasizing the need for the company to address the issues they have faced over the past few years.
Overall, American Airlines' strong financial performance in Q4 2023 signals a positive outlook for the airline in a challenging economic landscape.
