In a significant development in the ongoing battle against drug cartels, Mexico's National Guard has apprehended Néstor Isidro Pérez Salas, also known as "El Nini," the alleged security chief of a faction of the notorious Sinaloa cartel. "El Nini" is accused of leading a group of bodyguards responsible for protecting the sons of Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán.

Following the arrest of their father, the sons, known as the "Chapitos" (little Chapos), emerged as leaders of a faction within the Sinaloa cartel. According to US authorities, three of El Chapo's sons, Ovidio Guzmán López, Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar, and Jesús Alfredo Guzmán Salazar, have reportedly built a fentanyl-trafficking empire that smuggles millions of deadly doses of the synthetic opioid to the United States.

The arrest of "El Nini" is a significant blow to the organization. US investigators believe that he is one of the most feared hitmen for the Chapitos, responsible for carrying out kidnappings, tortures, and murders of rival drug traffickers. His detention took place in Culiacán, the stronghold of the Sinaloa cartel, during a joint operation involving soldiers and members of the National Guard.

Mexican media reports indicate that "El Nini" attempted to evade capture by climbing onto the rooftop of a house in the Colinas de Rivera neighborhood. However, he gave up after shots were fired and was quickly transported to Mexico City. In order to prevent any outbreaks of violence, additional security measures were implemented in Culiacán, where the city was previously paralyzed due to intense violence when Ovidio Guzmán López was arrested.

The arrest of "El Nini" is believed to be linked to the retaliation carried out by the Sinaloa faction in response to the 2019 arrest of Ovidio Guzmán López. These acts of violence included prison riots, shoot-outs, and blockades of major roads. The situation became so volatile that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador ordered Guzmán López's release. However, he was ultimately re-arrested in 2023 and extradited to the United States.

The apprehension of "El Nini" has been hailed as an "excellent result" by a police sergeant involved in the operation. This arrest marks a significant step towards curbing the activities of the Sinaloa cartel and its involvement in drug trafficking and violence. The United States is also intensifying its efforts to combat the flow of fentanyl from Mexico, focusing on dismantling the cartels responsible for smuggling the deadly synthetic opioid.

As the fight against drugs continues, both Mexico and the United States are determined to dismantle these criminal organizations, safeguarding the lives of citizens and preventing the illicit trade of dangerous substances.

In other news, a separate police operation in Scunthorpe led to the discovery of a significant amount of a class A drug, resulting in an individual appearing in court. Authorities have been successful in cracking down on drug-related activities, aiming to tackle the pervasive and damaging effects of illicit substances in communities.
