Alaska Airlines Temporarily Grounds Boeing 737-9 Fleet Following Flight Incident

In a recent incident, an Alaska Airlines flight from Portland to Ontario, California experienced a depressurization, prompting the airline to take immediate action. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon when Alaska flight 1282 departed from Portland around 5 p.m. Fortunately, the aircraft was able to safely return to Portland International Airport without any further complications.

KATU News confirmed that the missing part of the fuselage was identified as an exit door, which appeared to have been violently ripped off based on images seen by Robert Katz, a commercial pilot and flight instructor. Recordings obtained from LIVEATC.net captured the moment when the Alaska pilot declared an emergency due to the aircraft's depressurization, adding an element of urgency to the situation.

Passenger accounts shed light on the harrowing experience inside the aircraft. Evan Smith, who was on the flight, described a loud bang followed by a whooshing sound as oxygen masks deployed throughout the cabin. The incident caused a boy's shirt to be sucked out of the plane, with his mother desperately holding on to him.

Despite the alarming event, all 174 passengers and 6 crew members on board Flight 1282 landed safely. Alaska Airlines promptly issued a statement expressing their commitment to investigating the incident thoroughly and sharing more information as it becomes available.

FlightRadar24.com data indicates that the Boeing 737-9 MAX involved in the incident was newly manufactured, having received its certification in November 2023. Boeing, the aircraft's manufacturer, released a statement expressing awareness of the incident and their cooperation with the investigation.

Following the incident, Alaska Airlines CEO Ben Minicucci took the precautionary step of temporarily grounding the airline's fleet of 65 Boeing 737-9 aircraft. Each plane will undergo comprehensive maintenance and safety inspections before being returned to service, a process expected to be completed in the next few days. The decision was made to prioritize passenger safety, which remains the airline's paramount concern.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has initiated an investigation into the event, and Alaska Airlines has pledged its full support. The airline's teams are currently providing assistance to passengers affected by the incident in Portland, as well as working to support those traveling in the coming days.
