In a frightening incident that unfolded outside Hueytown High School on January 26, 2024, shots were fired after a basketball game between Hueytown and Leeds High School had concluded. Eunethia Arnette Shackleford, a 30-year-old from Hueytown, now faces charges of attempted murder and possession of a deadly weapon on school grounds.

Shackleford, who is the mother of one of the juveniles involved in the dispute, was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on Saturday. She remains in custody on bonds totaling $67,500. The warrants for her arrest were issued by the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office in the Bessemer Cutoff.

According to Jefferson County sheriff's Lt. Joni Money, a deputy was present at the game and was notified around 9:30 p.m. that shots had been fired outside. Witnesses at the scene reported that a group of juveniles were engaged in an altercation in the school's parking lot when adult family members, including Shackleford, arrived and got involved.

During the incident, Shackleford allegedly fired shots into the air before fleeing the scene with some of the juveniles. Responding swiftly, Jefferson County deputies and officers from the Hueytown Police Department arrived to disperse the gathered individuals.

The incident prompted Jefferson County Schools Superintendent Walter B. Gonsoulin Jr. to issue a statement denouncing the violence. Gonsoulin expressed concern for the safety of children and fans attending sporting events, emphasizing their right to enjoy these occasions without fear of violence. He condemned Shackleford's actions as irresponsible and highlighted the importance of setting a positive example.

Gonsoulin praised the quick response of law enforcement authorities and expressed gratitude that no injuries were reported. He further stated that while more information may be forthcoming, the focus for now is on gathering facts and allowing law enforcement to carry out their duties. Gonsoulin expressed hope that the person responsible would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining safety and security in school environments. As the investigation continues, authorities are determined to ensure that such acts of violence are not tolerated and that those responsible face appropriate consequences.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of this alarming incident, it serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance and collaboration to safeguard our schools and protect the well-being of all individuals involved.
