In a shocking revelation, authorities have announced that the 12-year-old who sent seven bomb threats to Maryland schools this month was fully aware that state law would prevent any charges from being filed. The news came to light after a thorough investigation carried out by the Montgomery County Police.
According to Montgomery County Police Chief Marcus Jones, Maryland law only allows children under the age of 13 to be charged with offenses that qualify as a "crime of violence." As a result, the young suspect knew that there were legal limitations surrounding their age and that they would not be held accountable for their actions.
Detectives successfully apprehended the suspect after speaking with them, during which they admitted to sending threatening emails to Montgomery Blair High School on October 13, 16, 17, as well as Monday and Tuesday. Additionally, the suspect confessed to being behind separate bomb threats emailed to Oak View Elementary School and Silver Spring International Middle School on October 15.
The identification of the suspect was made possible with the assistance of the IT staff at Montgomery County Public Schools. Chief Jones expressed his disappointment and frustration, stating, "It is disheartening to accept that the individual responsible for disrupting the educational process and instilling fear in our community was well aware of the legal limitations surrounding their age."
Chief Jones further emphasized the severity of the threats, describing them as "reckless and dangerous." He also highlighted the significant impact they had on the operations and finances of the police department, diverting resources away from other pressing calls for service. "Dispatching officers and K-9 units to investigate these threats, especially when our resources are already stretched thin, jeopardizes the safety of our community," he stressed.
Despite the knowledge of their immunity from charges, the motive behind the young suspect's actions remains unknown. The incident serves as a concerning reminder that even children can engage in serious criminal behavior with potentially severe consequences.
As the investigation continues, authorities will be working to ensure appropriate consequences and measures are put in place to deter similar incidents in the future.
