Wyandotte County Lake Park Closed Due to 'Extreme Storm Damage'

" Utility crews are tirelessly working to restore power to thousands of customers who remain without electricity across the Kansas City area.
According to Evergy, over 10,000 customers are still without power on the Kansas side, including Wichita and Hutchinson, which were also affected by the damaging storms. On the Missouri side, nearly 4,000 customers are without power, with the majority concentrated within Kansas City's city limits.
The Kansas City Board of Public Utilities is focused on restoring power to approximately 3,550 customers, primarily in the area near N. 77th Street and Leavenworth Road, as well as the downtown Kansas City, Kansas area. Fortunately, no significant outages have been reported in the Platte-Clay Electric Cooperative and Independence Power & Light service territories.
Wyandotte County Lake Park, located in northwest Wyandotte County, sustained significant damage from the storm. Several trees were uprooted, power lines were downed, and the park's docks were heavily affected. Unified Government staff is currently assessing the extent of the damage and formulating a plan for repairs and restoration.
In addition to the closure of Wyandotte County Lake Park, there have been reports of damage throughout the Kansas City area. Some areas that experienced the brunt of the storm include Shawnee, Overland Park, Parkville, and Leavenworth. Downed tree limbs, multiple trees toppled, and property damage have been reported in these locations.
As of 9 a.m. Monday morning, Evergy reported that more than 25,000 customers are still without power. Power restoration efforts are underway with teams working on vegetation and lines, while damage assessment teams evaluate the situation. Estimated restoration times are currently unavailable.
The Board of Public Utilities in Kansas City, Kansas reports that more than 7,000 customers remain without power on the Kansas side. This is a decrease from the peak outage of 11,500 customers recorded late Sunday night.
Overnight storms brought significant disruption, knocking out power to over 90,000 customers across the Kansas City area. However, power crews have been diligently working to reduce the number of outages. At around 11:30 p.m., nearly 90,000 Evergy customers were affected, but this number decreased to 37,047 customers by 5:15 a.m. BPU reported 92 outages impacting 10,304 customers, while Independence Power and Light reported 7 outages affecting 134 customers.
