Both cyclists took to social media to convey their disappointment, with Stuyven comparing his injuries to his own version of the notorious 'Hell of the North', referencing Paris-Roubaix, which is often dubbed as such.

Stuyven expressed his gratitude for the support and well-wishes he has received, and mentioned that he looks forward to returning next year for the Tour of Flanders. Van Aert, who had dedicated the beginning of his 2024 season to these races, will also miss out on his coveted victories at the cobbled Monuments after a crash left him injured.

Van Aert, the leader of Visma-Lease a Bike, not only has to withdraw from the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix, but his participation in the Giro d'Italia in May now hangs in the balance. His team stated that a decision will be made in the coming weeks regarding his recovery and subsequent participation in the Italian Grand Tour.

The crash that resulted in these injuries occurred during a rapid approach to the Kanarieberg climb. Van Aert clipped the rear wheel of his teammate Tiesj Benoot, leading to a domino effect that caused several riders, including Stuyven, to sustain injuries. Both Van Aert and Stuyven had performed admirably in the lead-up to the crash, with Van Aert winning the Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne and achieving podium finishes in other races.

While Van Aert underwent a successful operation today, the extent of his injuries paints a grim picture. The examination revealed a broken sternum, broken collarbone, and multiple broken ribs. It remains uncertain when he will be able to resume cycling.

In addition to Van Aert and Stuyven, several other riders were also affected by the crash. Biniam Girmay and Laurenz Rex of Intermarche-Wanty, Mads Pedersen of Lidl-Trek, and Michele Gazzoli of Astana Qazaqstan were among those injured. Meanwhile, six other riders involved in the incident were able to continue racing.

As the cycling community rallies around these injured athletes, their road to recovery and future endeavors remain uncertain. Fans will anxiously await updates on their progress and hope for a quick return to the sport they love.
