A winter storm is set to hit Colorado this weekend, bringing a mix of rain and snow that will gradually transition into heavy snowfall, according to forecasters from the National Weather Service (NWS). The storm will result in challenging travel conditions, with snow-covered roads expected, especially in mountainous areas and along Interstate 70 southwest of Denver.
On Friday, the temperatures in Denver will reach a high of 43 degrees, making it too warm for the snow to stick during the day. Little to no snow accumulation is expected before 7 p.m. However, as the evening progresses, the snowfall is anticipated to intensify. Between 7 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday, the Denver area may receive up to five inches of snow, with the heaviest accumulation expected overnight.
Overnight, temperatures in Denver will drop below freezing, hovering around 31 degrees, creating ideal conditions for snow to accumulate. As Saturday afternoon approaches, the temperature will rise again, reaching a high of 43 degrees, indicating that the snowfall is likely to taper off during the day.
The mountains, particularly Rocky Mountain National Park near Estes Park and the foothills of Boulder, Gilpin, and Clear Creek counties, are projected to experience significant snowfall. Winter Park, Georgetown, and Central City are expected to receive up to nine inches of snow over the weekend, based on the NWS weather outlook.
The NWS has issued a hazardous weather outlook, warning of the potential for moderate to heavy snowfall spreading eastward onto the Interstate 25 corridor and plains on Friday night. Lower elevation areas along the I-25 corridor can expect one to four inches of snow, while the foothills and east slope mountain ranges may receive four to nine inches of snow.
Drivers are advised to exercise caution and be prepared for treacherous road conditions, especially in mountainous regions and over the passes. The combination of snow and freezing temperatures could create hazardous driving conditions.
As always, it is prudent to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and follow any advisories or warnings issued by local authorities.
