In a landmark deal, media executive Bob Iger and journalist Willow Bay have agreed to make a significant investment in Angel City Football Club (ACFC), the most valuable women's professional sports team in the world. The announcement was made by ACFC, which plays in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), on Wednesday.

While the exact amount of the investment remains undisclosed, the valuation of the team has been set at an impressive $250 million. As per NWSL regulations, the controlling owners must own at least 35% of the team, which means that Iger and Bay's purchase agreement is estimated to be a minimum of $87.5 million.

Moreover, Bay will not just be a passive investor but will also serve as a member of the Angel City FC board, granting her full control over the team's operations. This move is seen as a strategic step to strengthen the club's position and advance their mission of promoting equity for athletes and women-founded businesses.

The purchase of Angel City FC comes at a time when women's sports, along with the NWSL, are experiencing rapid growth in viewership, attendance, and investment. Last year, Angel City FC surpassed all other women's teams in terms of revenue generated, showcasing their ability to be a strong player in the sports business industry. They also topped the charts in NWSL attendance and sponsorship revenue.

Angel City FC was founded in 2020 by actress Natalie Portman, venture capitalist Kara Nortman, and entrepreneur Julie Urhman, with the aim of prioritizing female ownership and equal pay for women. The ownership group also includes renowned sports icons like Billie Jean King, Abby Wambach, Lindsey Vonn, and several former players from the U.S. Women's National Team.

The addition of Iger and Bay as investors brings new perspectives and resources to the club, allowing for accelerated growth both on and off the field. Bay, who serves as the Dean of the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, expressed her commitment to driving equity and further advancing the club's mission.

The existing owners will continue to be actively involved in the new team structure, ensuring a smooth transition and collaboration. The investment from Willow Bay and Bob Iger not only highlights the potential and value of women's sports but also signifies the expanding interest and support for women's professional soccer.

As Angel City FC looks towards a bright future, this major investment sets a precedent for other women's sports teams and reinforces the belief that the growth and success of women's sports are here to stay.
