The Minnesota Wild made a strategic move during the 2024 NHL Entry Draft by trading with the Philadelphia Flyers to secure highly touted defenseman Zeev Buium at the 12th overall pick. The Wild traded their 13th overall pick and a 2025 third-round pick to move up one slot and acquire the talented player.

Buium, a standout defenseman from the University of Denver, was projected to be chosen much earlier in the draft, possibly even within the top three selections. However, the Wild capitalized on his unexpected slide and were thrilled to select him at the 12th spot.

As a freshman in college hockey, Buium showcased his exceptional skills on the ice by scoring an impressive 11 goals and accumulating 50 points in just 42 games. His offensive prowess and defensive abilities made him one of the most electrifying defensemen in collegiate hockey last season, despite being one of the youngest players in the NCAA.

This bold move by the Wild resembles their successful acquisition of goaltender Jesper Wallstedt in previous years, proving their knack for identifying talent that others may overlook.

According to experts at Elite Prospects, Buium's performance on the ice this season solidified his position as the top draft-eligible defender in college hockey. His exceptional point production, coupled with his ability to excel while facing challenging assignments, make him a force to be reckoned with. Drawing comparisons to Quinn Hughes, Buium's performance reminded many of the impact Hughes had during his college years.

With the 45th overall selection in Round 2, the Wild will kick off the second day of the NHL Draft. Fans eagerly await the next addition to the team in their continued quest for success on the ice.
