Ohio-based Wiers Farm Inc. has announced an expanded recall of vegetables and bagged salads sold at major retailers, including Walmart, Aldi, and Kroger. The recall comes after fears that the products may be contaminated with the potentially harmful bacteria, listeria monocytogenes. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) posted a notice alerting consumers to the potential contamination.

The additional recalled items include bagged cucumbers, peppers, yellow squash, zucchini squash, green beans, and jalapenos. These products were sold in bags, individually, or by the pound in stores located in at least 13 states. The recall was issued as a precautionary measure while the company investigates findings reported by the Michigan Department of Agriculture.

Wiers Farm's voluntary recall, initially issued on July 12, was limited to a select number of whole cucumbers and bagged salad cucumbers. These particular products were not grown or harvested by Wiers Farm but were sourced from outside suppliers and handled and distributed by the company.

In collaboration with the Ohio Department of Agriculture, Wiers Farm is actively conducting an investigation into the potential source of contamination. The company's commitment to the safety and well-being of consumers is evident in their proactive approach to the recall.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis in humans, with symptoms ranging from mild to severe. Mild symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In more severe cases, individuals may experience a headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Certain groups, such as young children, elderly individuals, and those with compromised immune systems, are at higher risk and may face fatal consequences if infected.

Additionally, the bacteria can pose serious risks to pregnant women, potentially leading to miscarriages or stillbirths. Health officials emphasize the importance of avoiding consumption of contaminated food to prevent any adverse effects on vulnerable individuals.

Consumers who may have purchased the recalled products are urged to return them to the point of purchase for a refund. Anyone experiencing symptoms related to listeria contamination should seek medical attention immediately.

Meanwhile, authorities continue to work diligently to determine the exact source of the contamination and ensure the safety of the public. Regular updates from the FDA and Wiers Farm will help to keep consumers informed about the progress of the investigation and any further developments related to the recall.
