White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan has announced the decision to impose more than 500 new sanctions on Russia as the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine surpasses the two-year mark. Ukrainian officials are considering inviting Russia to a peace summit on Ukraine's terms, with chief of staff Andriy Yermak stating that representatives of the Russian Federation could be presented with a peace plan aimed at ending the conflict.

The conflict has seen Ukraine's defense weakened, allowing for significant Russian advancements for the first time in months. Ukraine has attributed its challenges to a lack of continued funding from the U.S., as Republican lawmakers have prevented further spending on Ukraine this year.

Despite Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's peace proposal in late 2022, calling for the immediate withdrawal of Russian forces from Ukraine and a return to pre-war borders, Russia swiftly dismissed the offer, leading to a lack of direct talks between the two nations. Experts predict that the war is unlikely to conclude in 2024, with ongoing tensions on the horizon.

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently vowed to enhance Russia's military capabilities, including modernizing its nuclear capabilities. The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to unfold, with uncertainty surrounding the path to peace as both sides navigate the complexities of the war.
