In a move that has sparked controversy and criticism, the White House proclaimed March 31 as Transgender Day of Visibility, coinciding with Easter Sunday. The decision drew backlash from conservatives and other critics who argue that it is an attack on Christianity.
The White House released a statement honoring the contributions and courage of transgender Americans on Transgender Day of Visibility, stating, "You are loved. You are heard. You are understood. You belong. You are America, and my entire Administration and I have your back." President Joe Biden, invoking his authority, proclaimed March 31, 2024, as Transgender Day of Visibility.
Critics of the proclamation argue that recognizing Transgender Day of Visibility on Easter Sunday undermines the significance of the holy day for Christians. The Trump campaign called on President Biden to apologize to millions of Catholics and Christians who believe Easter Sunday is solely dedicated to celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
However, it is worth noting that Transgender Day of Visibility has been observed annually on March 31 for over a decade. International Transgender Day of Visibility was established by activists to honor and raise awareness about transgender individuals and their struggles.
Fox News Digital uncovered a comprehensive list of other LGBT-focused holidays celebrated throughout the year, some of which are recognized by the White House. These include International Asexuality Day, International Day of Pink, Day of Silence, Harvey Milk Day, Pansexual and Panromantic Awareness Day, and International Drag Day. Additionally, there are entire months dedicated to LGBT causes, such as Pride Month in June, LGBT History Month in October, and Transgender Awareness Month in November.
While not every holiday is acknowledged by the White House or high-ranking lawmakers, cities, universities, LGBT organizations, and government officials do commemorate these events. The Biden administration has previously celebrated various LGBT holidays, including National Coming Out Day, Lesbian Day of Visibility, International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, and Transgender Day of Remembrance.
White House spokesman Andrew Bates defended the decision, stating that President Biden, as a Christian, aims to bring people together and uphold the dignity and freedoms of every American. He dismissed criticism as attempts to divide and weaken the country.
President Biden did post an Easter message celebrating the power of hope and the promise of Christ's resurrection, emphasizing the importance of the holiday to Christians. The Biden administration has a history of promoting and supporting the LGBT community, hosting the largest Pride celebration in White House history last year. The president has also vowed to combat discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community.
This controversy is not the first time the White House has faced criticism during events related to the LGBTQ+ community. Past incidents include a transgender model and activist exposing her breasts at a Pride event and inviting an anti-police nonbinary drag queen to the signing of the Respect for Marriage Act.
As Republicans continue to vocally oppose the White House's decision to recognize Transgender Day of Visibility on Easter Sunday, tensions surrounding religious freedom and LGBTQ+ rights persist, prompting a national conversation about inclusivity and respect for diverse communities.
